La Sgambeda: international cross-country skiing marathon in Livigno
The Sgambeda is a 42-kilometre international cross-country skiing marathon held every December along the Spцl valley in Livigno. La Sgambeda is the opening race of the FIS Marathon Cup series. This snowy adventure through the Alps attracts thousands of cross-country skiing enthusiasts, ranging from world-class competitors to weekend warriors.
Several events take place on the days preceding the main competition on Sunday. These include meetings, debates and exhibitions at the “Sgambeda tent”, an expo area at Plaza Placheda and the Minisgambeda, a race for children from eight to 17.
The high altitude (1800m over sea level) poses one of the biggest challenges of a course that winds through the beautiful surroundings around Lago di Livigno and along the so-called Small Tibet valley on the Italian side of the Swiss-Italian border. For those who do not wish to compete, hot beverages may be enjoyed as the race is viewed from the lodges of the Livigno Resort.
When the serious race ends, the serious party begins in the restaurants, pubs, and discotheques of this charming Alpine town.
